Shehu Sarkin Fada, IDEA Representative, Nigeria, at turbaning ceremony held when he became the chief community leader of persons who have experienced Hansen's disease. In this role he is an official lawmaker in the emirate council in the local kingdom in Zamfara State. The turban is a traditional crown, worn by individuals with a title in the council.
IDEA identifies, provides and facilitates leadership opportunities for people who have experienced Hansen's disease. Through these opportunities, individuals gain recognition as leaders and assume progressive leadership roles within their communities, countries and internationally. Following are examples. IDEA's Board is composed of individuals in the fields of education, social services, psychology, and finance from Brazil, Ghana, India, Nepal, Niger, South Korea, and the United States, who have experienced Hansen's disease.
